Versailles wins Invitational
By George Starks
VERSAILLES- With the top two seeds going at it in the final round of
the day, Versailles wrestling coach A.J. Bey knew it would all come
down to his Tigers and Covington.
With both Versailles and Covington having scored wins over National
Trail, Tri-County North, Urbana and Celina, both teams headed in to the
final round with 4-0 marks.
Versailles took a 33-22 victory over the Buccs giving them a 5-0 mark
on the day and the tournament title.
“Our kids wrestled pretty well today,” remarked Bey. “Five teams and
five matches won, I’me very pleased.”
The tournament duel format was a set up conceived by former Tiger
coach, Bill Rolle.
“In the past, we’ve went to Sandusky in a 10 team duels match,” said
Bey. “Our seniors are well aware of this format and they know what’s
going on.”
After the single duel win over Indian Lake earlier in the week, Bey had
stated that it would all come down to them and Covington in the
Saturday invitational.
Bey was dead on that prediction. With the win, the Tigers will move up
in the local polls.
“The Dayton Daily News has its mat polls,” said Bey. “We are always
battling for the top spot in the D-III polls so with the win today, we
should be number one.”
With the 5-0 record, Versailles now goes to 13-0 in duel competition.
“It was a great day for the kids,” said Bey. “Our heavyweight, Andrew
Smith, beat a kid today that was about 60 pounds heavier than he is. He
pinned that kid with matches to go, so that was big for him. We had a
lot of kids go undefeated today so I’m very happy with everyone’s
performances today.”
Versailles will next see action in the Greater Miami Valley Holiday
Tournament to be contested Dec. 28-30.
