Lady Wave get
first win of the season

GREENVILLE - After dropping its first three games of the season, the
Greenville Lady Wave got their first victory of the season Saturday
over Xenia.
Led by senior Megan Galloway's 26 points, the Wave took a 58-45 victory
over the visiting Buccaneers.
After losing to Celina, Wayne and Miamisburg, getting that first 'W'
was huge for Wave coach Kyle Vanover.
"This was a big day for us," said Vanover. "I've been telling the girls
once we get that first win and got a taste of blood, then we can keep
attacking and getting better. It's nice to get that first win of the
season so early instead of having to wait until the eighth or ninth
game of the year."
Greenville came out on defense on the attack as Vanover employed a man
press that more than turned the trick.
In a pre-season interview, Vanover said for his team to be successful,
the defensive intensity had to be turned up a notch.
Saturday, the Wave did exactly that.
"We talk defense all the time and we tell the girls that our defense
actually should be fueling our offense," Vanover stated. "In the first
three games, we couldn't get over 50 points. Today, we scored 58 points
and it was because the defense created opportunities for the offense to
score. Unfortunately, our offense will fuel the other teams offense
because of our turnovers. We had some mistakes but for the most part,
the girls played hard and they are starting to buy in and you could
really see that on the floor."
On offense, Galloway was backed up with 10 points from Erin Albright
but it was the play of others that got Vanover’s attention.
"Kids like Megan are expected to do what she did tonight," admitted
Vanover. "But if it weren't for the play of Tara Guillozet getting some
shots off and the play of Haley Luce and Paige Testor getting their
shots, that doesn't allow her to do what she does."
With the play of Testor being a factor, the Wave junior grabbed several
offensive rebounds that came up huge for the Wave.
"Paige really has a nose for the basketball," Vanover pointed out. "She
is really coming out of her shell and she knows what's expected of her."
While the offense clicked most of the time, the ability to hit from the
foul line was a contributing factor.
"We were 16 of 24," said Vanover. "Anytime you put up 16 points from
the foul line, that means you're attacking the bucket, getting fouled
and taking care of the basketball. I'm still trying to build the
confidence of each one of these kids and getting the first win of the
season was a big confidence boost for my kids."
In addition to her 26 points, Galloway had 14 rebounds as well.
Now 1-3 overall, the Wave will see action again next Saturday at Ft.
Recovery.
