NEW MADISON- The Tri-Village Patriots was looking for a tune-up for the
upcoming post-season tournament and got that Tuesday in the form of
Lehman Catholic.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 20-15 first quarter lead…something the
Patriots haven’t experience much this year, trailing early in a game
but posted a 72-66 victory on senior night..
Lone senior, Evan Barger, scored 6 in the opening frame with Shade
Brubaker adding 5 to lead the Pats. But the Cavaliers were raining
threes connecting on six, two each from three different players, to
grab the early 20-15 lead.
“We came out in a diamond and one looking to contain Alex Baker… but
they had other guys knocking down outside shots and in hindsight maybe
it wasn’t such a good idea and some of that’s on me as the coach,” said
Josh Sagester.
In the second quarter Tri-Village slowly started to creep back into the
game with Barger and Kyle Pipenger both scoring 4 points each.
Then it was Shade Brubaker who got hot scoring the next 8 points
including two treys to give T-V a 33-27 advantage at 1:45.
The Patriots however didn’t take care of the basketball, allowing the
Cavaliers to close the half strong and trailing 33-32 at the half.
“Defensively we did a much better job in the second quarter, said
Sagester. We went back to our strength and just manned them up.”
Lehman came out in the third period with a whole new look applying a
1-2-2 full court press and then settling into a 1-3-1 zone, packing it
in to take away the inside where T-V found success in the first half.
Offensively T-V had their least productive quarter as Lehman outscored
them 18-14 to take a 50-47 lead into the final frame.
With Lehman still frustrating the Patriots with their zone, junior Kyle
Pipenger went to work. Pipenger erupted for 17 of his game high 35
points in the final stanza.
“Kyle just elevated his game to another level, said Sagester. “He was
able to find the seams and was feeling it offensively.”
And the Patriots needed it as Lehman had built a 60-53 lead. Over the
next 5 minutes Tri-Village ran off 14 unanswered points to take a 67-60
lead with just 1:09 to play.
“We really started to lock them down defensively after giving up some
easy transition baskets to start the 4th quarter,” said Sagester.
“Not only did Kyle score for us he really put the clamps on Baker,”
added Sagester.
Lehman wasn’t ready to concede as Baker then hit back-to-back
long-range treys to make it 69-66…but Tri-Village sealed it at the line
down with Brubaker and Matt Werner going 6-of-8 down the stretch to
gain the win 72-66.
“It was senior night for Evan Barger and he got us off to a good start
in the first half, to have the game he had tonight and our team being
able to generate the win, it’s a great way to send him off. Sagester
continued with praise, he just keeps doing the things we need him to do
and we have more we want to accomplish yet before the season is done.”
Evan Barger agreed with Coach Sagester saying, “I couldn’t have asked
for a better senior night with all the support from my family, friends
and especially this basketball team going out and getting the win… it
was a great night.”
“It was another good night of shooting for Shade Brubaker and as a team
we kept out composure and pull it together down the stretch to get the
win,” concluded Sagester.
Pipenger scored 35 points and went 9-for-10 from the stripe to lead 3
Patriots in double figure scoring. Shade Brubaker hit 4 treys and had
18 points while Evan Barger scored 12 points and had 7 rebounds.
Tyler Cook also pulled down 7 boards and Matt Werner dished out 8
assists in the win.
The Junior Varsity pulled out a last second one point win on two Tommy
Bell free throws with just 4 seconds left to play over a very good
Lehman Catholic team who had just two losses coming into the game.
With a win over Mississinawa Valley next week the Junior Varsity can
record back-to-back 20-0 seasons.
Both teams will be back in action on Friday February 17th traveling to
Mississinawa Valley to conclude the regular season.
