Versailles Tigers Bowling...
Lady Tigers wrap up at 10-3; JV teams finished runners-up

The Versailles Boys Varsity Bowling team rolled their final match of the regular season against the 2011 State Runner up Wapakoneta Redskins. The contest was held at 20th Century Lanes in Lima on Saturday, February 11.

With both teams holding a 14-0 record and the title of WOHSBC Champions on the line, this was going to be a good match. “After seeing some of the scores that the girls were posting the 1st shift, I told the boys this was going to be a high scoring match. The oil pattern that was put out was going to make it easy to hit the pocket, therefore, resulting in a bunch of strikes.”

Although Versailles bowled two great games over their season average of 979, Wapak outscored Versailles in the first two games with totals of 1112 to 1029 and 1136 to 1079. “Although Wapak was bowling way above their team average, we kept it close. Anything can happen in the Baker games.” Going into the baker games with a 140-pin lead over the Tigers, the Redskins won the first two baker games with scores of 190 to 186 and 201 to 195.  The Tigers came back to win the third baker game 174 to 169.  Wapak topped Versailles in the fourth baker 180 to 176, but Versailles came out on top in the fifth and final baker 195 to 149.  The Tigers gained a little ground in the baker games as the scores were very close, but still came up short, and the Redskins won the match by 103 pins with a total of 3137 pins to the Tigers’ 3034.  Versailles put up some solid scores:  Michael Davidson 245 and 201, Aaron Niekamp 223 and 204, Nathan Peters 223 and 199, Ben Didier 216 and 209, Jordan Groff 196, and Kyle Bohman 192.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough to overtake the Redskins, who have a team average of 1011 and baker average of 197.5.

“These boys had an incredible regular season. To repeat as Conference Champions with the caliber of some of these teams was not going to be easy. The respect each team had for each other and to watch the kids from each team compete today truly showed what high school sports competition is all about,  sportsmanship.”

The Tigers move on to the Sectional Tournament at Marian Lanes in Huber Heights on Wednesday, February 15, at 9 AM.  Versailles, along with Ansonia and Mississinawa, breaks away from the WOHSBC and goes head to head with 19 entirely new teams at the Sectional tournament level.  The team format for the Sectional Championships will consist of three games of regular bowling followed by six games of baker format bowling.  Six teams and six individuals will qualify for the District Tournament at Eastern Lanes in Middletown on Friday, February 24.  Please visit www.wohsbc.com for in depth stats and the final conference standings. Winning Season for the Lady Tiger Bowlers!

The Versailles Girls Varsity Bowling Team traveled to 20th Century Lanes in Lima on Saturday, February 11 to bowl their final match of the regular season in the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference. Prior to the match all the schools recognized their Varsity Seniors, and the Lady Tigers were proud to recognize Joanna Cruz and Haylie Schlater! The Lady Tigers were scheduled to bowl against the Lady Redskins of St. Henry, but unfortunately the Tigers bowled unopposed. With tournament competition right around the corner the girls took to the lanes as if they were bowling against another team.  Their first game which included 4 Turkeys ended with an 897. Senior Haylie Schlater was the lead bowler with a 211. In their second game the Lady Tigers bowled an 820 with senior Joanna Cruz leading with a 185. Way to go Seniors!

Versailles went into the baker games with a 1717 pin count and added 804 with their 5 baker games. The Tigers ended the match with a total pin count of 2521. The Lady Tigers ended their season 10-3. “The girls had a great year this year finishing at 10-3 and finishing in 4th place. Their only losses were to defending state champions, St. Marys, 2011 state qualifier Coldwater and perennial powerhouse, Wapakoneta. We are strong team this year and I think we are really going to surprise some teams during the tournament.”

The girls travel to Marian Lanes in Huber Heights on Friday, February 17 at 9:00 am for Sectionals. The schools they will be up against include Ansonia, Bellefontaine, Benjamin Logan, Catholic Central, Chaminade-Julienne, Graham, Greeneview, Greenon, Indian Lake, Kenton Ridge, Mechanicsburg, Mississinawa Valley, Northeastern, Northwestern, Ponitz Career Tech, Sidney, Shawnee, Springfield, Tri-Village, Urbana, and West-Liberty Salem. Out of these 22 schools the top 5 teams and 5 individuals (top 5 individuals qualify if their team does not) will qualify for Districts.
