Patriots too much for
Ansonia

ANSONIA- It didn’t take Tri-Village long to establish dominance Tuesday
against Ansonia. By the end of the first quarter, the writing was on
the wall as the Patriots rolled up a 23-2 lead with eight minutes in
the books; the only thing left to be determined was the final score.
By the time the final buzzer sounded, a game that started out as
serious business, became a 68-30 blowout.
After coming off two huge wins over Bethel and Dixie, D-III teams, the
Ansonia game could have become a game the Patriots could have been
blindsided by. That wasn’t the case.
“As a coach, you always worry about these games, that your team won’t
come in ready to play especially after a big week-end,” Patriots coach
Josh Sagester said. “I’ll give my kids credit. They showed up ready to
play from the beginning to the end.”
Coming in with a huge size advantage, the Patriots pounded the ball
into the post, taking advantage of the height that 6-5 Evan Barger and
6-4 Tyler Cook provided.
Led by Shade Brubaker with 18 points, Barger dumped in 14 while Cook
and Kyle Pipenger added 12 each. Ansonia played a man to man defense
against the Patriots, something Sagester’s kids don’t see much of.
“I though my kids handled the man pressure well tonight,” Sagester
stated. “Our guards are poised and mature and the big guys did a great
job of catching and finishing as well.”
“With the inside game taking its toll on the Tigers, Ansonia tried to
shut things down in the middle. That was when Brubaker started to light
things up from the outside.”
By games end, Brubaker had hit five three pointers and 18 points
overall.
“He is one of the best shooters in the area,” Sagester said of his
junior forward. “He got some good looks early but I thought the tone
was set by our senior, Evan Barger. He came out ready to play and
that’s what a senior leader does. He comes out ready to play.”
Along with his 14 points, Barger brought the Windex, collecting 10
rebounds as did Cook, 12 points, 10 boards.
The Tigers, 4-10 (3-5) came in with big players out for the season,
most notably, senior Dusty Holcomb with a shoulder injury.
“I can’t say enough about the effort we had tonight,” said Tigers coach
Darrick Barga. “We didn’t match up well at all. Tri-Village is a well
coached, well disciplined team and they are good. We tried to pressure
the ball but they handled the pressure. They had the size advantage and
they made us pay for that.”
Ansonia will be back in action Friday against Newton while the Patriots
will next see action on Feb. 10 with the same Newton Indians.
The Tri-Village junior varsity remained undefeated with a 46-35 victory
over Ansonia.
