BROOKVILLE- When Tri-Village played Bethel earlier in the season the
Patriots jumped out to a 23-2 first quarter lead and held the Bees to
just 11 total points for the game.
The two teams would square off again in the second round of the OHSAA
sectional tournament and the Bees had something to prove.
Bethel would score 11 points in the opening frame matching the total of
the entire game in the first match-up. In fact the Bees led 7-4 with 5
minutes to play and traded the lead a few times before the Patriots
would end the quarter with a 16-11 lead. In the end, the Patriots would
roll to a 73-34 victory.
“We are sleep walking right now and if we don’t wake up it’s going to
catch up with us before it’s over,” said coach Brad Gray.
The Patriots were able to slumber through the second quarter with the
infusion of the play of freshman Echo Brown on defense and Krystal
Falknor on offense as the Patriots won the quarter 19-5 to take a 35-16
halftime lead.
Clearly upset with his team in getting off to a slow start for the
second game in a row, coach Gray lit into the girls at half time.
“It’s my job to get this team inspired to play basketball, for many of
the players on this team I shouldn’t have to. They are the leaders and
have been through this before… but I literally had to rip into all five
of our starters at the half,” said Gray.
“I really don’t like doing that and for me to have to call them out and
praise the play of a freshman, don’t get me wrong. I’m happy with the
effort from Ecko Brown…but our three and four year players are the ones
who should be leading this team.”
Whatever he said worked as Tri-Village exploded for 23 points in the
third quarter..
“We really got some nice play tonight from our bench and I hope going
forward we come out with more effort and intensity and play the way I
know we can.”
Gray praised the play of Krystal Falknor who scored 18 points for the
Lady Patriots. Kayla Linkous led all scorers with 22, and Shaye Thomas
added 10 in the win.
The Patriots advance to the sectional title game on Saturday at 1 pm,
taking on the Bradford Railroaders who were 45 – 35 winners over
Emmanuel Christian.
