Pirates shoot down
A-Tigers

ANSONIA- “Mental errors and stuff that just brings a team down. We had
times when we would make a run and then I would look at the score and
see we were getting further behind.”
That was Darrick Barga’s assessment after Ansonia fell to Riverside
Saturday, 47-36. Even when Ansonia coach Darrick Barga thought it was
getting better, it wasn’t.
No matter what kind of a run the Ansonia Tigers made on Riverside
Saturday, things never got better. After Ansonia took the early lead,
5-0, Riverside started to move. With the ship’s sails raised, the
Pirates set sail on the Tigers, holding a 15-10 lead after one.
Then Riverside found the answer. Pounding the ball into the paint, the
Pirates built a 27-20 advantage at the break and maintained that
advantage the rest of the way.
“Allowing the ball in the paint is something we have to stop,” Barga
said. “Something we need to work on is not allowing the ball to go
inside as easy as we have been. We continue to work on this. We take
away the vision of the guard and the post guy needs to work around and
not have us playing from behind.”
Being in a come from behind situation is nothing new to the Tigers. In
the third, Ansonia went on a mini run to start the half but still
trailed by six at the 4:02 mark after cutting it to three just 54
seconds earlier at 29-26.
“It’s something we’ve dealt will all season,” Barga pointed out. “We’re
use to it and sometimes, it works for us because we start playing a
little harder defense and our press works a little better. There’s the
mental aspect of it to because you get behind and you have that uphill
battle. Every time you look at the scoreboard, ‘oh, we’re still down’
and mentally it wears you down. It takes its toll on you mentally. We
just have to put four quarters together. We make a run and we are still
behind.”
Ansonia (4-8) will try to snap a four game losing streak Friday at
Bethel and will head to St. Henry on Saturday.
