NEW MADISON - Hall of Fame night proved to be successful for
Tri-Village Saturday night as the Patriots edged out Dixie 54-50.
Inducted into the Hall were Teresa Ballard Maples and the legandary Don
Brawley.
Brawley was a lifetime resident of the Braffetsville and New Madison
areas. He was born a deaf-mute. He grew up on the family farm with his
parents, a brother and 3 sisters. He attended school in Columbus, Ohio
and then his family moved back to New Madison when Don was a young man.
Don was well know for his loyalty to sports teams in the area. In 1960
a new ball diamond was dedicated and named Brawley field. The summer
recreation leagues hired him as their groundskeeper for the baseball
fields.
Over the years, Don became the school mascot and rode the team bus to
games. He attended all boys and girls baseball, softball and basketball
games offering everyone a piece of gum along with a quick note on the
note pad that he was never without.
In 1978 The Varsity Club presented Don a plaque for attending 1,365
consecutive basketball games, a record for the Guiness Book of World
Records at the time. Don had amassed over 1700 consecutive games
Don handed out chewing gum to young and old alike. When word of this
trademark spread to Chicago, The Wrigley Company sent him an ample
supply of gum. It is estimated Don purchased over 2,500 packs of gum to
give away as well.
Don was 79 years old when he died in the early 80’s and in his honor
Don’s picture has been commemorated in the mural in the commons area.
Also his plaque, letter jacket and note pad are in a case located along
the entrance hallway.
Tresa Ballard Maples is a 1988 graduate of Tri-Village. She was a four
year letter winner in softball and a three year letter winner in
basketball.
Junior Kyle Pipenger led the Patriots attack with 22 points as
Tri-Village led at all the breaks, 15-12, 22-19, 40-36 and 54-50
despite trailing 17-15 at one point in the second frame.
Evan Barger and Matt Werner added 10 each for the Patriots who will
travel to Ansonia Tuesday night for a Cross County Conference clash.
Bradford tops TCN

The Bradford Railroaders have something to cheer about, with a league
win on Friday night over TCN 55 to 45 on the road. Saturday Night was a
nail bitter win over Yellow Springs 52 to 48.
It was a night to remember a lot going on with the Hall of Fame
inductions and elementary cheer night.
The Railroaders did not disappoint. In a back and forth game the
Railroaders played a physical game and made some key free throws at the
end of the game to come away with the victory.
