PITSBURG- Franklin Monroe junior Taylor Robins pumped in 17 points
Monday as the Franklin Monroe Lady Jets had no problem with Dixie in a
52-37 victory over the Lady Greyhounds.
Holding an 18-3 lead after the first quarter, the Jets were in control
right from the beginning.
“We executed the game plan that we set forth before the game,” Jets
coach Gavin Spitler said. “We took their two guns out of the game
(senior Ciara Bates and sophomore Kylie Hundley) and that was what we
were looking to do. That was the game plan and it worked well.”
When the final horn sounded, Bates finished with 16, most of those
coming late in the game, and Hundley never scored.
“Bates never had anything until about two minutes to go in the third,”
Spitler pointed out. “We never let her score the entire game until that
point so we played pretty good defense on her.”
On the night, the Jets had only 14 miscues and forced countless
turnovers on defense.
Franklin Monroe put together four quarters of solid basketball but
Spitler pointed out one area that concerned him.
“We gave up way too many offensive rebounds (8),” said Spitler. “If
they convert on the majority of them, this game is different. We have
to shore that up. It’s almost like we don’t do this (get offensive
boards) and we need to do this.”
On offense, the Jets put three in double figures in a game that saw
leads of 29-13 at the half and 41-19 after three.
Led by Robins, Franklin Monroe got a dozen from Haley Gray and 10 from
Claire Neiswander.
“Taylor has been our leading scorer this year,” said Spitler. “It’s
nice to see Claire up there. She’s got the ability to score like this
every night. She gets ahead of herself sometimes but tonight, she
followed through and put the ball in the basket. There were a couple of
times where she could have got a few more points but she played well.”
It was as close to playing four quarters of basketball as most coaches
will ever see in a game.
“I thought we played a great first quarter,” said Spitler. “We won the
second quarter by a point and we had a good third quarter,” Spitler
said. “We had the junior varsity in for the fourth quarter and they
might have been nervous but overall, we played well tonight.”
Now 5-7 on the season, the Jets will play Thursday at Brookville.
Dixie won the junior varsity game, 33-23.
