Pitsburg- Junior Taylor Robbins was on fire Thursday as the Franklin
Monroe Lady Jets shot down the Newton Indians 59-50 in Cross County
Conference basketball at The Hangar.
Robbins netted 30 points against the Tribe, including six treys on the
night.
“I was very happy with the way Taylor played tonight,” said Jets coach
Gavin Spitler. She was really under the weather tonight.”
Leading 20-10, 34-21 and 51-30 at the breaks, the Jets attack backed
off in the final eight minutes, something Spitler wasn’t pleased with.
“We played three good quarters today, which was an improvement,” said
the Jets coach. “We did not finish well and that’s something we have to
learn to do.”
The Jets got things started with all guns blazing and held big leads
for the first 24 minutes of play. The final eight became the focus for
Spitler as his team only mustered eight points in the frame while
allowing 20 to be scored.
“We shot well in the first three quarters,” said Spitler. “We shot
fairly well from the field and we moved the ball extremely well. We had
a couple of girls that played exceptionally well tonight (Robbins and
Haley Gray, 18 points) and they stepped up and finished. We’ve talked
about that all week, just finishing. Today, we finished for the first
three quarters.”
Up by 20 going into the final quarter, the Jets slowed things down and
it nearly cost them a victory as Newton cut the double digit lead to
single numbers.
“We were less aggressive in the fourth quarter,” said Spitler. “Because
of that lack of aggression on offense, it led to some turnovers but
overall, I was really impressed with the first three quarters and
Newton shot the ball fairly well also and they never gave up. We had
such huge lead and we lost sight of the goal. We start thinking about
steals and blocks instead of solid basketball and that’s why we gave up
20 points in the fourth quarter.”
The Jets will be idle until Monday when they host West Milton.
