UNION CITY - “It may have been just the second win of the season
for Mississinawa Valley but when victories are few and far between,
each one is special.”
That was the way Mississinawa Valley coach Jason Burkholder expressed
himself in a phone interview after the Hawks dropped a 61-49 score on
National Trail Tuesday.
Led by sophomore Dane Blumenstock with 22 points and Brandon Byers with
13, the Hawks led at all three of the breaks, 14-9, 24-20 and 40-32
before posting the win.
The Hawks started strong and finished that way, but Burkholder admitted
there was a point when he got a little nervous.
“We made some poor decisions and they (Trail) cut it to four at
half-time,” Burkholder said. “I told the kids in no uncertain terms, we
had to play harder and smarter. We were making them do exactly what we
wanted them to do but we lost our shooters. We started to throw the
ball around and take some bad shots. We cleaned that up in the third
quarter and came out and outscored them 16-12 in the quarter.”
While Burkholder didn’t have his numbers yet, he was pleased with the
board work against the Blazers.
“We really rebounded well tonight,” Burkholder said. “I am very pleased
with our board work tonight. We were able to sustain our pressure with
the press we put on and we got some turnovers and easy lay-ups and that
fed in to our offensive confidence. With the exception of the second
quarter, we protected the ball very well. We played smart, got a bigger
lead in the fourth quarter, ran our offense and did what we’re supposed
to do. We’ve not played with the lead very often this year so I was
pleased with the fact that we were able to do what we did in the fourth
quarter.”
Now 2-11 on the season, the Hawks will hit the road Friday to tangle
with Cross County Conference leader Miami East.
In other scores from Tuesday, the Wave went to Sidney only to fall to
the Jackets, 89-84, while the Ansonia Lady Tigers got a 39-31 win over
Twin Valley South.
