PICKERINGTON- Tri-Village senior Kayla Linkous pumped in 29 points
Saturday in the Lady Patriots 59-46 victory over Reedsville Eastern in
the 15th Annual All Ohio Girls Prep Shoot-Out played at Pickerington
High School.
The key to the Patriots success came in three forms.
1.) Stop the Lady Eagles sophomore stand-out, Jenna Burdette.
“We have to find a way to slow her down,” said Patriots coach Brad Grey
before the game. “She is their leading scorer.”
Tri-Village found a way to do that. Burdette, who averages 19 points a
game, was held to just two points and fouled out with 5:14 remaining in
the game. The Patriots went after her right from the start and had her
on the bench with three fouls at the 3:22 mark of the opening quarter.
With less than two minutes gone in the third frame, Burdette had picked
up her fourth foul and found herself on the bench again before fouling
out in the fourth.
2.) Do a better job on the boards.
Even though the Patriots blasted Twin Valley South Thursday, 96-30,
Gray was not happy with his team’s rebounding this season.
“We have not been great on the boards and we need to improve,” Grey
said.
In a loss against Miami East and a victory over Lehman Catholic earlier
this season, the Patriots struggled on the boards. Saturday,
Tri-Village lost the battle of the boards, 28-25, but got key rebounds
when it needed them as Linkous yanked down 13 on the day. Of the 25
boards, the Pats pulled down six offensive rebounds.
3.) Protect the ball.
Tri-Village had 15 turnovers in its victory but forced 18 on defense
against the Eagles.
Holding a 16-12 lead after one, the Patriots went into the break tied
with Eastern 32-32. It was the third quarter that proved to be the
difference.
Tri-Village opened up the second half on a 10-0 run and opened up a
42-32 lead before Savanna Hawley drained a trey at the 4:21 mark of the
quarter. The Patriots built as much as a 12 point lead with 3:56
remaining when Shea Thomas hit both ends of a one and one. In addition
to the 29 by Linkous, Richards and Thomas netted a dozen each in
support.
With the win, The Patriots move to 11-1 on the season and is 1-1 in the
Shoot-Out after falling to Waterford a year ago in their first ever
appearance there.
Tri-Village will host Arcanum Tuesday in a conference game.
