Warvel scores season high in points

RUSSIA- Averaging just 7.4 points per game, Versailles Sophomore Chloe
Warvel dropped in a season high 15 Saturday to lead the Lady Tigers to
a 53-38 victory over the Raiders.
Versailles jumped out to the early lead and never looked back, leading
19-11, 26-22 and 37-28 at the breaks.
“I thought the ladies did a nice job,” said Tigers coach Jackie
Stonebreaker. “There were a couple of scares, one early in the game and
one toward the end of the third quarter when they started to come back
on us, getting to within eight. The girls stepped it up, she (Warvel)
has a great shot and she’s not afraid to drive. She can take a couple
of dribbles and pull that jumper. Chloe was on her game today.”
In addition, Katie Heckman netted a dozen in support of Warvel, despite
being on the bench with three fouls early in the second quarter.
“As much foul trouble as she was in, she finished strong around the
basket today,” Stonebreaker pointed out. “We had kids hitting some
outside shots today. We were clicking on all cylinders today
offensively. The girls were getting out-rebounded but were able to
capitalize on some good plays we did have.”
Leading by just four at the half, the Tigers took control to start the
third frame, holding the Raiders to only six points in the stanza and
building a nine point lead heading into the final eight minutes.
“The intensity coming out of the locker room at half-time was superb. I
think that really changed the tone of the game,” Stonebreaker said.
The intensity started on offense as the Tigers went on a 7-0 run,
building a 33-22 lead, making Stonebreaker very happy.
“If we could come out against all teams that would be great,”
Stonebreaker stated. “When we can come out, make a good push and put
them back on their heals a little bit, then that’s what we want.”
With just five games left in the regular season before sectionals
begin, getting kids playing time is essential.
“We want as many girls on the floor as we can get,” said Stonebreaker.
“We want to rotate as many as we can in and out of every game and give
teams as many looks as we can. Every girl on our team has something
different to add to our game. I don’t think we have a top five on this
team. We have some really good players. We have players that have
really good defensive skills and some have the offensive skills. It’s
kind of a toss up who’s going to come but it also throws the other
team’s defense off because they don’t know who they are going to guard
every game.”
The victory puts the Tigers at 11-4 on the season and will look at
Delphos St. Johns Thursday in a MAC contest.
In the junior varsity game, Versailles rolled to a 33-20 victory.
