in GWOC showdown

GREENVILLE- No one likes to lose, especially a coach. Greenville boys
basketball coach Dane French is no different.
Even with the 57-46 loss to GWOC rival Troy Friday, French said he was
very happy with the way his boys played against the Trojans.
The difference for the Wave on this night came in the opening eight
minutes when turnovers led to easy buckets in transition for Troy.
After one, the Wave was staring at a huge hole, down 17-6.
“We gave up probably five lay-ups early off turnovers,” French said.
“From there, it was a pretty even basketball game. We had the lead down
to six and had the ball a couple of times and couldn’t get shots to
fall. I couldn’t be more proud of my kids. We are a much improved
basketball team from where we were.”
Greenville outscored Troy 14-9 in the second quarter to close to within
a 26-20 count at the break. The difference being the Wave defense and
the ability to set the table for the offense.
“We’re just much improved in all phases of our game,” French stated.
“We struggled in the beginning but the kids are getting better.
Probably the biggest improvement is how we are being more physical.”
The Wave played Troy even in the third, trailing 40-34, heading into
the final eight minutes, even though Greenville had gotten to within
three, 30-27, with 5:51 remaining in the third.
“My kids have heart,” French acknowledged. “These kids are great kids.
I couldn’t be happier with the progress we are making. I know we got
beat and we haven’t had the satisfaction of a win in a while but we’re
seeing it. We have to stay the course and turn the tide for Greenville
basketball. We are getting better and one of these days, we are going
to knock somebody off that’s not expecting it.”
One thing French can see is a light at the end of the tunnel for Wave
hoops.
“Our junior varsity won tonight (52-36) and that’s three or four in a
row for them I think,” French said. “The kids are buying into what we
are trying to do to make this program better. We are getting back to
the fundamentals and it will pay dividends down the road.”
Greenville was led by Kindell Hemer with11 and 10 from Curtis Conrad.
The Wave will play at Trotwood on Tuesday
