fizzles

GREENVILLE- After one quarter of play, it looked like the Greenville
Lady Wave would hang with Vandalia-Butler. With things knotted at 8-8,
Greenville was right in the thick of it.
That all would change and change quickly.
By the break, the Wave would trail 34-15 and would be held to just nine
more points from the end of the first frame to the end of the third.
Something Wave coach Dave McFeely is all too familiar with.
“That’s been our M.O. most of the year,” said McFeely. “We get off to
good starts and tonight, we did what we were supposed to be doing at
the start of the game. We got out of it in the second and we don’t get
back into it until the fourth quarter.”
By games end, the scene was the same as the Wave went down to a 56-29
loss. The lack of shooting and turnovers loomed large for the Wave.
“Turnovers killed us,” McFeely said. “We don’t have a true point guard
and it shows every time we play. That team (VB) was athletic and they
were quick. The moved the basketball well and we were just slow to
react.”
With Megan Galloway out due to an injury, McFeely felt the loss of his
post player in Wednesday’s game.
“That hurt immensely because it took away our first substitute off the
bench,” McFeely pointed out. “It took away a lot of our depth and we
give up 17 points a game and nine or ten rebounds a game with her out.
We hope we get her back for St. Marys on Tuesday night.”
With Galloway wearing a boot on her right foot, junior Erin Albright
was forced to go it almost alone in the post position. Albright had
eight points and seven rebounds in a game that was brutal for her.
“Erin worked hard,” McFeely pointed out. “She gets the ball in the post
a couple of times and I would like to see her take it up instead of
pass it back out and draw the foul.”
While the score was short, the effort wasn’t.
“I can’t criticize the lack of effort on this team,” said McFeely.
“These kids really tried and I think they want to be good basketball
players. We run out of gas early in games. We lose our concentration
early. We need a leader out there. We need to have a little pride in
ourselves as a team and in Greenville High School.”
