GREENVILLE- It’s a head to head county match that has become an annual event. When Versailles and Greenville hit the wrestling mat, it’s a huge event. Thursday was no different.

With Versailles holding a 34-27 team lead and only two matches left to be contested, Greenville’s bid at getting a win fell by the wayside in the 170 pound weight class as the Wave was forced to forfeit, giving Versailles a 40-27 advantage.

The Tigers capped the victory off at that point, winning the single duel, 46-27 after getting a pin at 182, claiming the victory for the second year in a row.

“The kids are coming along and it’s always tough after the holidays,” said Versailles coach A. J. Bey. “Now that Christmas is over, we are getting back at it. The junior high and junior varsity looked good tonight and we’ve got some good things coming up.

“This has turned into a great rivalry,” Bey continued. “It doesn’t matter who has the best team at this dual, it’s just one of those rivalries when the kids get up to wrestle. It’s great to be able to come in here and get a win.”

It was a night when Versailles never trailed and Greenville could force one tie on the night, that being 12-12 after Ian Warner got a 12-6 decision over Aaron Kiser of Versailles at 113 pounds.

After that, the Tigers regained the lead when Andrew Slonkosky pinned Wave senior Jordon Jenkinson in the 120 pound match.

Winning the duel meet going away, two matches really stood out in the mind of the Tigers coach.

“I think Joe Cain at 145 is really improving,” Bey stated. “He is really wrestling well, as is Andrew Slonkosky at 120 pounds. All the kids are looking good.”

Cain pinned Tim Harless at 1:18 in the second period.

Greenville had very few bright spots. One of those came in the form of senior Jon Edwards. Edwards tech. falled Brandon Christian 23-8 at 152 pounds.

“Brandon is just a sophomore and he was really upset with himself,” Bey said of his young wrestler. “I have watched Edwards come up through the years and he’s a good kid.”

“Jon just keeps rolling and what he does doesn’t surprise me. He and Nelson Roberts (132) stepped up tonight,” said Greenville coach John Shutts. “I thought Harless did well tonight even though this was his first varsity match ever. He’s not wrestled since he was in junior high. He got pinned but he gave a great effort. We knew they had a better squad than we did but we felt we could split this at seven and seven or maybe even eight and six in our favor. We knew it would come down to bonus points too and they had more pins than us. We have a young team and we are getting better.”

Shutts compared this year to a year ago.

“Last year, we lost 60-21 or something like that and this year it wasn’t nearly as bad,” Shutts pointed out.” I think we looked better than we did last year against them. A few years ago, they were young and we laid the hammer to them and now, they are returning the favor.”

Now 11-1 on the year, Versailles will be home next Thursday to host Brookville and then will be on the road Friday at Allen East. Greenville will see action today as the varsity will travel to Troy and the reserves will go to Xenia.
