Summer league
sets out on tournament trail
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- Summer league baseball teams will start their second season
today as the summer league teams begin their tournament runs.
GTI will play Versailles today at 5:30.
GTI is coming off a 9-5 loss to Piqua on Thursday, after posting a
16-13 win over the same team the night before in Piqua. Now, GTI coach
Trey Wolter and his team will eye the bunch from Tiger Town, Versailles.
“I really don’t know much about Versailles,” said Wolter. “We never
played them during the regular season. I asked the Piqua coach about
them and he said they were down this year.”
With scheduling being a problem, Wolter has missed a lot of teams that
GTI should have played.
“We played Eaton eight times this year,” Wolter pointed out. “That is a
third of our schedule and we’ve got to change that next year. We never
played teams like Versailles or St. Henry. Our director couldn’t get
teams close for us. We could get teams from Chillicothe and Akron.
That’s just too far to travel.”
Now that tournament time is here, there are teams other than Versailles
in the GTI sectional that Wolter will need to get some scouting on.
“We have Troy in the sectional and we haven’t played them,” said
Wolter. “Houston is in there too and we’ve not played them either and
they all are post season teams and decent teams, not horrible at all.
We need to add a few more quality teams to the schedule.”
Action at Piqua will start at 12:30 today with Houston and Sidney
taking the field. Piqua and Troy will follow as GTI and Versailles will
conclude the days action.
