Reds complete
yet another sweep
CINCINNATI -- The Reds did just enough on Sunday to grind out a 2-1 win
against the Brewers at Great American Ball Park, completing the
three-game sweep of their National League Central rivals.
Johnny Cueto’s seven solid innings led the first-place Reds to their
fourth straight win, and Cincinnati held Milwaukee to two runs or fewer
in all three games of the series.
While Cueto’s line looks dominant -- one run on eight hits with a
season-high nine strikeouts -- the Reds’ ace had to pitch himself out
of a few jams.
He was tested in the first inning following a single from Nyjer Morgan
and a double from Aramis Ramirez two batters later. Cueto intentionally
walked Corey Hart to load the bases with two outs, then fanned Rickie
Weeks to avoid any early damage.
He surrendered his lone run of the afternoon in the third, as Ramirez
drove a liner to right, scoring Norichika Aoki, who doubled to lead off
the inning.
Aoki caused more problems in the seventh with a one-out double, but
Cueto again pitched his way to safety.
The Brewers stranded 11 baserunners in the ballgame.
All the scoring took place in the third, as Cincinnati answered
Milwaukee’s run with two of its own.
Chris Heisey, who got the start in center, singled to right with one
out and stole second base with Wilson Valdez at the plate. He then
scored when Valdez knocked a single up the middle.
Brewers starter Mike Fiers attempted to pick off Valdez at first, but
the right-hander was charged with a throwing error as Valdez advanced
to third.
Valdez scored the eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by
Brandon Phillips to put the Reds a season-high 15 games above .500.
It was the first time in 74 games a home run hasn’t been hit in Great
American Ball Park, dating back to July 29, 2011.
