What did I tell
you?
By George Starks
Very seldom do I ever get to blow my own horn but today is one of those
days. Have you looked at the baseball standings as of Wednesday, July
26?
If not, take a look.
On May 7, 2012, the Reds were sitting in second place, 2.5 games behind
St. Louis. Yes, those rotten Cardinals!
At that point, many of you were ready to jump head first off the top of
the county courthouse because the Reds weren’t playing up to their
potential.
Many of you wanted Dusty Baker fired.
As far as most of you were concerned, you were ready to throw in the
towel. The season was over. Baker was washed up and our Cincinnati Reds
were finished with no hope of even making the post season.
At that point, I pointed a few things out in a column that had a
heading of, “Don’t jump yet!” or something of that nature. I pointed
out several seasons when the Reds got off to a horrible start but
finished by winning the division and even the World Series.
Granted, we are barely over the half way point of the season and
there’s a ton of baseball left to be played but...
As of yesterday, the Reds sported a record of 58-40 (18 games over
.500) and riding a seven game winning streak. Not to mention the fact
that we have won 13 of out last 14 games. In that time span, the Reds
have broken out more brooms than one can find at Wal-Mart.
Cincy has swept the Cards, Brewers and most recently, the Astros and
will look to do the same starting tonight in Denver against the
Rockies. Not to mention what they did on that west coast trip leading
up to the All-Star break.
We are 2.5 games ahead of the Pirates in the division... yes, the
Pirates (who would have thought?) with the Cardinals six games out in
third place.
Wow, what a turn of events in a little over a month and a half.
I’m not ready to get in touch with Rob Butcher in Cincinnati to reserve
my seat for the post-season yet, but things are looking good from where
I sit. All we really need is a healthy Joey Votto to get back in the
line-up. We need that left handed bat.
As for now, the Reds are doing fine. If you want a bookmark for the
season, look at the schedule. After the Reds get back from the road
trip that will end Sunday, Cincy will host San Diego and then the
Pirates.
Mark it down.
That series could very well tell the Reds story for the rest of the
season, but Cincinnati will play Pittsburgh in Pirateville on September
10.
Get ready folks. The real ride is about to begin.
BTW... Did I mention the Cardinals are six games behind the Reds in
third place?
