GREENVILLE - Bump... set... kill!
Three terms volleyball players know well, and on the last day of her
camp Friday at Greenville High School, first year head coach Lori Davis
got a long, hard look at her new team.
With 27 high schoolers attending and 24 finishing with three having
injuries, Davis had a lot of positive things about a team that’s a work
in progress.
“This cam was kind of an introductory moment for the kids and me,” said
Davis. “These kids knew me through my daughter Nicole and the fact that
I helped Tammy Abel with her camps. It was a good time this week. We
worked on the basics and covered all the basic stuff for when we start
practice and when that starts, the kids are really going to have to
step it up.”
Starting August 6, Davis is going to introduce her Wave players to a
new concept in volleyball.
Two-A-Days!
“This is something the girls aren’t use to,” Davis pointed out. “When
we start a week from Monday, we will be here from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. So
it’s going to be a lot of hard work to get ready for that first
scrimmage. These girls have a lot of potential. We have some great
setting coming up and hitters that are tall.”
Now that Davis has been with her team for a few days, what has she seen
that she views as positives?
“I’ve seen girls who are family that want to win,” Davis said. “They
want to give the very best they can and they want to win. We have kids
who are playing at a high level. I had eight or nine freshman here and
I thought that was a huge plus for the program. They came in and were
ready to learn. I saw, in five days, some huge improvements with them
so I see some great potential in this bunch.”
When looking at her freshman and sophomores, Davis noted many positive
things.
“I saw a lot of desire in them,” Davis said. “They gave everything they
could and wanted to be the best they could be and that’s exactly what I
saw. They were out there giving it all they had. I did not see any of
them being lazy.
“I can be tough,” Davis continued. “I am big on conditioning and we
worked really hard all summer. When they came in and I started working
them, they were all sweaty and out of breath and yet, they kept going
until I saw they had reached that threshold and then we were done. So
they are ready.”
While the underclassmen were getting it together, the juniors and
seniors were doing exactly what Davis expected out of them.
“They were showing some great leadership skills, flat out,” Davis
noted. “They were helping the younger kids and they were working as
hard as they could. I didn’t see anyone not working hard. They were
working on their strength as well as control. Then they would turn
around and talk to the younger kiddos and help them out. It was a good
time and it was a great way for us to get to know each other.”
With the many positives, there were some things that weren’t so
positive, as there are things to be improved on.
Davis said the biggest area that needed improvement was to make them
more competitive overall.
The Wave will scrimmage at Ben Logan on Friday, Aug 10 and will host
Preble Shawnee in a scrimmage on August 14 at 5:30.
Greenville will open its regular season at Miamisburg on August 28 and
will have its home opener August 30 against Xenia starting at 5:30 p.m.
