Buckeyes taking
spring game to Cincy
In a press release Monday, Ohio State announced that the school was in
discussions with the Cincinnati Bengals that could move the 2013 Ohio
State LiFE Sports Spring Game to the Queen City while historic Ohio
Stadium undergoes renovations.
While nothing is finalized, the move would potentially give the
Buckeyes extra exposure in a part of the state that has traditionally
been less “pro-OSU” than other regions.
“We are very appreciative to be in discussions with the Cincinnati
Bengals,” Director of Athletics Gene Smith said. “We look forward to
continuing our discussions and look forward to an opportunity to bring
the Buckeyes into Cincinnati and closer to our Southern Ohio fans.”
In 2001 Ohio State moved the spring game to Crew Stadium while Ohio
Stadium was given a bit of a facelift, so the move away from the
Buckeyes’ home turf would not be a first. The decision to move it to a
different city though would be. The renovations to the legendary home
of the Buckeyes will include stripping and replacing some of the 1922
-era coatings and concrete that comprise the A and C decks. Those decks
were not a part of the three-year renovations that took place from
1998-2001.
The Buckeyes last played in Cincinnati in September of 2002, and barely
escaped a Bearcats upset by knocking off UC 23-19 on their way to a
14-0 season and the school’s first national championship since 1968.
The game date is set for April 13th, 2013.
