State Gold in Two Events
Versailles Track Finals...
Versailles Team takes Third Place
COLUMBUS — Versailles’ Samuel Prakel sent a message to the rest of the
state Saturday.
That message being, “here I am, beat me.”
Saturday, the Tiger junior won the state championships in the 1,600 and
3,200 meter runs, helping to lead Versailles to a third place finish in
the state track and field meet at Ohio State behind Akron St.
Vincent-St. Marys and Dunbar.
“What can be said about Sam that hasn’t already been said,” said
Versailles coach Rob Winner. “It all started with the 4x800 relay team
when they finished second. Sam had a great performance but he wasn’t
going to catch the guy ahead of him but we had a solid scond place
there. Then he went out and had a great two mile and mile runs. Sam is
a hard worker and is very disiplined.”
Prakel won the Division II boys mile run finnishing with a time of
4:10.33 and backed that up with a 3200 winning time of 9:16.14 at Jesse
Owens Memorial Stadium.
Both times were personnal bests for Prakel.
In the 4x800 relay, Prakel, Chad Winner, Sam Subler and Micheal Wenig
finished behind Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary’s in the D-II competition in
a time of 7:56.21 behind the winning time of 7:51.75.
“Sam has stayed healthy all year,” said Winner. “He works hard and it
all culminated Saturday when he out-kicked the guy in the end.
Year in and year out, Versailles falls into the elite in the state of
Ohio, no matter what the sport.
In the 2011-2012 school year, Tiger athletics has been at or near the
top in all three seasons starting with football and ending with track.
What’s the secret to the Tigers success?
“Hard work and dedication,” said Winner. The community support is
unbelievable but I think a lot of it is expectation of themselves..They
want to perform the best they can and they know what has been done in
the past by others and the kids want and expect the same from
themselves.if mom and dad won a state championship in a sport then they
want to do that to. Let’s face it, you drive into town and you see the
boards that has all the state chamions and you want yours there also.”
As a coach, Winner knows what he’s got in a team and what the kids do
in the overall.
“Having kids that go out and work hard and is as dedicated as these
kids are, it makes it so much easier on you as a coach,” Winner
admitted. “They know what to do when they go out there and they do it.”
