LaGrange: "Greenville is a class act"
By George Starks
AKRON- Getting to the Ship and winning was the goal.
“Silver is not an option.”
The goal fell short Saturday as Greenville fell 7-2 to LaGrange
Keystone in the OHSAA state finals at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
“I’m proud of my kids,” said an emotional Jerrod Newland. “I don’t know
what else to say. These kids came in, played their hearts out and we
left it all on the field.”
For four and a half innings, neither team could dent the plate.
Greenville got on the board in the bottom of the fifth and it got
started with one out.
After Haleigh Luce doubled, the Wave started to put the pressure on.
With two down and Luce at second, Paige Wolter singled to left putting
two on with two down. Kelly Martin singled, scoring Luce and the Wave
were on the board.
With Wolter at third and Martin at first, Greenville started to force
the action when Martin purposely got into a rundown. When Martin broke
for second, Wolter broke for home, scoring and giving Greenville a 2-0
lead.
A Lead Newland thought would stand up.
“We got the first out in the sixth and at that point, I was counting
outs,” said Newland. “I thought two runs was going to be enough.”
It was anything but enough. Keystone blasted though in the sixth,
sending nine to the plate, scoring five and taking a 5-2 advantage.
“I told my kids when Greenville went up 2-0 that they had better get it
together or this season was going to end with a loss,” said Wildcats
coach Joe Piazza. “Greenville is a class act and I knew if we didn’t
get it together, we were going to lose.”
Keystone scored two more in the seventh.
Overall, Greenville committed four errors, two that led to the Wildcats
five run outburst.
“It wasn’t Lady Wave softball out there,” said Newland. “The better
team won today.”
The Wave 22 game winning streak came to an end as the Wave finished the
season with a 29-5 record.
