Richards helping to keep things going
Female Athlete of the Month...
Patriot junior following great example
NEW MADISON- Tri-Village junior Teah Richards may seem like a small cog
in a big wheel known as Lady Patriot basketball but without the small
cogs, the wheel doesn’t turn.
In the month of February, Richards has been huge part of that
successful wheel as the Patriots went 6-0 in the month including three
sectional wins, over Jefferson, Bethel and Bradford.
In the month of February, Richards said it was a change in attitude
that got her straightened up. That adjustment coming from the home.
“My dad (Niles) has been pretty tough on me lately,” Richards said.
“I’ve been trying to step it up and play my best for the team. I was
the Elite Athlete of the Week earlier this month and now Athlete of the
Month. It feels good to be recognized because it wasn’t happening at
the start of the season so I must have improved on something to be
getting these honors.”
So what’s it like playing for Coach Brad Grey?
“He doesn’t have a problem yelling at you at all,” Richards admitted.
“You had better do your best for him or you will hear about it. He lets
you know when you’ve done something wrong and that’s fine because you
have to take responsibility for what you do on the court. He’s helped
me improve my game because he gives me confidence in myself from the
way he talks to me and what he tells me. He told me a long time ago
that I had talent and that was a big boost for me.”
On offense, Richards’ shooting skills has been there but the defense
has stepped up. With her dad helping to guide her, Richards gives a lot
of credit to her dad.
“I have a lot of talent in my family,” said Richards “My dad and I used
to go out and shoot a lot outside and he worked with me. He is hard on
me because he knows what I’m capable of and if I don’t play up to that,
he gets on me. When I slack on defense, he gets onto me about it. He
wants me to do my best at all times. It helps that he knows the game.”
Richards wants to go to college to be a vet tech or a nurse. She
carries a 4.0 g.p.a. and is one of 15 kids in her class to hold a 4.0
average.
