Wave Tennis comes up short
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- The Greenville boy’s tennis team came up short to Carroll Monday as the Patriots topped the Wave netters 4-1.
The lone victory for Greenville came in the first doubles as the Wave’s Landon Kiser and Sam Bowers defeated Carroll’s Niko Flores and Jacob Lebarnoff 6-0 and 6-2.
Even with the loss, Wave coach Dennis Kiser was upbeat about the performance of his team.
“We are very inexperienced,” said Kiser. “I’ve got three kids that have never played a varsity match before and last year, my number one singles player (Derrick Lockhart) split time between junior varsity and varsity. Actually, overall, I was pleased with how we played. Carroll is a pretty good team.”
While no coach likes losing, Kiser liked what he was seeing in his kids.
“We got better as the match went on,” Kiser pointed out. “I was really pleased with that especially with the singles. The second sets were a lot closer than the first sets. The closest of the singles matches came in the number three singles that featured Chase Strawser for the Wave.
In that match, Strawser and his opponent Matt Knolland went back and fourth on several points before Strawser succumbed 6-3 and 7-5.
“The kid from Carroll was streaky and he just gets a lot of things back,” Kiser said. “Chase would win two and he would win three then Chase would win three and that kid would win two and it was like that the whole match. Chase was actually up 5-2 in the second set and then lost five straight games.”
Greenville will travel to Wayne to take on the Warriors tonight.
