Lady Wave Softball...

GREENVILLE- If Greenville Lady Wave softball fans are looking for a new
soap opera, they need to look no further than their own team.
Call it “As the Wave Turns.”
With strong winds blowing from left to right and creating more havoc
than Wave coach Jerrod Newland would like to have had it, Greenville
kept things interesting right up to the final out. Leading 6-3 going to
the final inning, the Lady Wave allowed things to get interesting
before pulling out a 6-4 victory over Fairborn.
Down by three runs, the Skyhawks got the seventh inning started with an
infield single from Becka Davis. One out later, Sophie Bolser doubled,
Katie Knecht reached on an error and Kylee Walker singled, scoring
Bolser putting the Hawks down by two.
With the bases loaded and one out, Wave senior pitcher Ashley Hanes
would fan Katie Walker and get Becka Haney to ground out to Kayla
Harshbarger at third to end the game.
“Bottom line is Lady Wave softball wins 6-4 and we faced a lot of
adversity to get there,” said Newland. “We didn’t play our best game
tonight and when you play good, solid teams like Fairborn who wins 20
games a year, you’ve got to play better than we did tonight.”
With five errors on the books, Newland was quick to point out those
mistakes.
“We booted the ball around a lot,” Newland said. “The conditions
weren’t the best out here today but weather is not a factor for Lady
Wave softball. Today the element was wind and we just need to make
better plays.”
Greenville got on the board first in the bottom of the first on
lead-off inside the park home run, her second of the season and it was
1-0, Wave.
Fairborn struck for two in the top of the third but Greenville gained a
2-2 tie in the bottom of the frame when Emily Beanblossom scored as a
pinch runner for Paige Wolter.
The Skyhawks took the lead in the fourth scoring once.
That would be the last time Fairborn would see that lead as Greenville
exploded for four runs in its half of the fifth, highlighted by a two
run triple off the bat of Haley Luce.
“We got the momentum back in that inning and you get 21 outs for a
reason,” Newland said.” We use all of them it seems like. In that
inning, sophomore Haley Luce drives one into that wind and if it
weren’t for the wind, that ball bounces off someone’s windshield out
there. But a sophomore steps up with the opportunity and pounds the
ball and puts us up for good. We picked up a good win against a quality
team. We are going to be better in May and we are still in March.”
Greenville, 4-1, will host Ansonia tonight.
