GREENVILLE- The Darke County Harness Horseman’s Association (DCHHA) got the 2012 summer racing season started Sunday with the annual spring matinee at the Darke County fairgrounds.

Thirteen races were on the card for Sunday’s event with the biggest winner being the association itself.

“It was a very nice crowd out here today,” said DCHHA president Kerby Wilcox, son of trainer Kent Wilcox. “The weather was great for people to come out and watch the racing today. I’m very happy with the way the day went.”

On the track, Doug Rideout got wins in the first three races and six on the afternoon while Chris Hope, son of long time driver Tom Hope, scored two big wins in the final two races of the day behind Hollywood Hustler and Lookout Macatoo.

Mandy Jones, daughter of horse owner Brian Jones, powered Pee Wee to a second place finish in the 11th with Barley’s Grin winning it in a time of 2:19, with Scott Ferguson driving.

With the passing of the legendary Gene Riegle, the final night of harness racing at the Darke County fair this year will feature the Gene Riegle Memorial. It will be a one mile Pace that will have no more than eight horses running for the $10,000 dollar purse.

Harness racing at the 2012 fair will begin the opening night, Friday, August 17, with the horses going to the post at 7 p.m. Saturday will see two sessions at 1 and 7 p.m.

The racing will give way to Foreigner on that Sunday night and two days of tractor pulling before resuming on Thursday with two sessions, beginning with the afternoon session at 1 p.m. and the 7 p.m. races.
