Lady Wave
gearing up for big game
By George Starks
GREENVILLE - The Western Brown Lady Broncos will come into Mason, ready
to do battle with the Greenville Lady Wave.
The object: To win the regional semi-final and move on to the regional
final and the right to play for the state championship in Akron.
The Wave Objective: Simple, to kick the Broncos all the way back to Mt.
Orab in Brown County.
The site is one the Wave is very familiar with in Mason. Just two years
ago, Greenville played there in the regional semis.
The Broncos come in with a 23-5 record while the Wave sported a mark of
26-4 overall.
“This is a very scrappy team,” said Wave coach Jerrod Newland. “They
are well coached. They play extremely good defense but I think we can
beat them. If we played them five times, we’d win four. We just can’t
let Thursday be that one day.”
In the opening two games of the sectional, Greenville had two close
nail-biters.
Against Tecumseh, the Wave got by the Arrows by a 2-1 margin. Five days
later at Tecumseh, Greenville squeaked out another win, beating Shawnee
8-7.
In the district championship game, Greenville posted a commanding 8-0
win over Bellbrook.
It’s a game that once again could work out in favor of the Wave.
“We are home team again this week,” said Newland. “We are going to put
it out there, tee it up and see what happens. I think my group is well
disciplined and tough enough and I think we’re going to come out on
top. It’s going to be another great day for Lady Wave softball.”
In 2010, the Wave went to Mason with a 17-0 record while Mason was 16-0
at the time.
“We beat Mason that day 4-0 on their diamond,” Newland said. “It’s a
1.5 million dollar complex and to be honest, it’s the second best
stadium in Ohio after Ohio State. So this is a place we are familiar
with. I don’t think at this point we are overwhelmed by too many
things.”
Bottom line;
“We have to go in there and play Lady Wave softball,” Newland pointed
out. “They have a pitcher that can move the ball around. She has 20
wins under her belt for a reason but if we put the ball into play,
we’ll be successful.”
The winner of the Wave-Bronco game will play in the regional final
Saturday at Mason starting at noon.
