Cueto rewarded with a win
NEW YORK -- After Johnny Cueto gave up two runs in the bottom of the
sixth, the Reds responded with three runs against CC Sabathia in the
seventh to take a 5-2 win over the Yankees on Sunday.
Cincinnati took two of three from New York to claim its first
Interleague series of the season.
Cueto and Sabathia, both of their clubs’ aces, provided an
as-advertised duel for much of the afternoon. Cueto delivered
seven-plus innings and gave up two runs and eight hits, with two walks
and five strikeouts.
It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the sixth. After Robinson
Cano gave New York a leadoff double, there was one out when Raul Ibanez
lifted a 1-1 Cueto pitch to right field for a two-run homer.
Cincinnati got it back for Cueto, however. The struggling Ryan Ludwick
led off with a first-pitch homer into the left-field seats -- his first
long ball since April 24 and fourth of the season. Two batters later
with one out, Ryan Hanigan made it a 2-2 game with his first homer of
the season that also landed beyond the fence in left field.
Zack Cozart kept the inning going with a single that skipped off of
Sabathia at the mound. With two outs, Drew Stubbs and Joey Votto walked
to load the bases for Brandon Phillips. Initially down 1-2 in the
count, Phillips also worked a walk on Sabathia’s 116th pitch that
forced home the go-ahead run. The rally ended when the inning’s ninth
batter, Jay Bruce, was called out on strikes.
Sabathia finished with three runs, six hits and five walks allowed over
seven innings while striking out six.
Cueto began the bottom of the eighth with Curtis Granderson hitting a
leadoff single, which had manager Dusty Baker reveal a changing of the
guard in the bullpen.
Lefty Sean Marshall, previously the Reds’ closer, entered and struck
out Robinson Cano on three pitches before quickly exiting. Right-hander
Logan Ondrusek took over to face Alex Rodriguez, who launched a first
pitch to the left-field warning track, where Chris Heisey made the
catch. Raul Ibanez popped out to keep Cueto in line for a victory.
Ludwick added a two-run double for insurance in the ninth.
Aroldis Chapman took over for the ninth and closed out the victory,
working a scoreless inning.
