Greenville in
search of state gold
Logan Elm makes school history
Game to be heard on wtgr (97.5) and wtgr.com
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- The Greenville Lady Wave softball team will hit the road
one final time this season today.
When the bus leaves Greenville High School for Akron, it will be the
most important trip of the year as the Lady Wave will have a date with
destiny.
That date is with Circleville Logan Elm at Firestone Stadium in the
state semi-finals.
While the Lady Braves will provide the opposition, it may be a game
that could either work in favor of or go against Greenville.
Simply put, this is the first trip to the state for this school in
softball. In 2007, it was the first trip for Greenville as well and we
all know what happened there.
With a 20-10 record, the Braves made school history when they beat
Warsaw River View 4-2 in the D-II Regional finals played at
Pickerington..
With things knotted 2-2 in that game, Logan Elm’s Taylor Saxton singled
and advanced on a hit by Mandy Grambo. Gambo hit a solo homerun in the
bottom of the fourth to get the Braves even in that game.
Then in the bottom of the sixth, Logan Elm scored twice when Taylor
Saxton singled then advanced to third on a Mandy Grambo hit. Both runs
would score when pitcher Morgan Conrad squeezed Saxton home for a run.
As Grambo was advancing to third, River Valley tried to throw Conrad
out as she was advancing to second, throwing the ball away and allowing
Grambo to score, making it 4-2 Lady Braves.
“This is going to be a good game but I’m confident we will win this
game,” Newland said in a phone interview. “If we play this team five
times, we win four of them. Let’s just hope Friday isn’t that day.”
When the Wave went to state in 2007, it was the first time in any sport
that a Greenville team had made it that far.
In 2012, mark a ditto by Logan Elm as the Braves will be making school
history.
Led by seniors Paige Wolter (c), Kelly Martin (ss), Taylon French (of),
Kate McDermitt (dh), Kayla Harshbarger (3rd) and Ashley Hanes (p), the
Wave will roll in with plenty of experience.
With junior Erin Albright at first and sopomores Haleigh Luce (of) and
Brionna Greer at second, the Wave pack a punch in the field as well as
at the plate.
Throw in Rachel Class in right and the powerhouse that is the Lady Wave
softball comes together.
“Rachel is coming into her own with the glove,” Newland said. “She has
a good arm and does well when it comes to playing her position. I’m
very happy with her.”
If you can’t make it to Akron, the game will be heard live on wtgr
(97.5) and wtgr.com. The first pitch is slated for 10 a.m. and Scott
Ward will be live starting at 9:45.

Ashley
Hanes will take the Lady Wave as far as her right arm will allow.
|
Sophomore
Brionna may bat ninth but her left handed, slapping skills with the bat
has proven to
pay dividends more than once. At second base, her glove does the
talking.
|
Kelly
Martin (aka K-Mart) is as slick at shortstop as she is at the plate.
Hitting over .400,
Martin is a proven leader on and off the field.
|
Taylon
French is as good as they come in center for the Wave.
|
Kayla
Harshbarger not only has done the job in the field at third but can do
the job at the dish,
hitting third for Greenville.
