off stubborn Ansonia bunch

NEW MADISON- The Arcanum Lady Trojans might have beat Ansonia by 16
points, 42-26, Saturday night but it wasn't as easy as the final score
indicates.
In fact, it was anything but easy.
Ansonia came out ready to play, jumping out to an 8-4 first quarter
lead at the 5:35 mark of the opening stanza.
Struggling on offense and defense, Arcanum got the lead with 1:46
remaining in the quarter on a shot by Alexis Abner, going up 9-8.
"It was a win but not a pretty one," said Arcanum coach Rachel Fearon.
"We weren't getting after it. They were using the back door on us and
we couldn't stop it. We just weren't ready to get it done. We weren't
mentally prepared at the start of the game to get it done."
Holding that 9-8 margin after the opening eight minutes, things never
got much better in the second frame as the Trojans went to the break
with a 25-19 edge.
"We just didn't play good defense," Fearon admitted. "If we had been
playing good defense, it would have set our offense up for more points.
We couldn't stop them using that back door play on us and I even called
a time-out and addressed that problem. We have to be able to make
adjustments. We stress the help side aspect in practice. We have to
guard the wing when you're on help side and they know that."
The Trojan defense finally went to work in the third quarter, holding
the Tigers to a mere two points and only seven in the half before
gaining the victory.
For Amber Short, the loss was not good for her team but she saw
improvement.
"I thought we came out ready to play tonight," said Short. "We made
some improvements and with such a young team, that's all I can really
ask. I was pleased with our first half but we're not putting four
quarters together. We executed in the first half and came out flat in
the second half. We have a lot to work on and tonight, I saw the effort
out there and I didn't see that Friday night."
Arcanum (1-1) will host Miami East in the Cross County Conference
opener Thursday while the 0-2 Tigers will host Mississinawa Valley in
their CCC opening game, also on Thursday.
