Trojans looking
to improve from a year ago
Chemistry a big key for Arcanum success
By George Starks
ARCANUM- A year ago, Arcanum coach Brian Gunter was faced with a young
team and the growing pains were a part on the Trojans 2011-12
basketball season.
Because of that youth, the Trojans finished 8-13 at the end of the
season.
A year later, Gunter still has a young team. With four seniors dressing
at the varsity level, Gunter looks to strong leadership and solid team
chemistry to lead his team to a successful season.
“We have seniors Simon Troutwine, Donnie Kress and Grady Garno,” said
Gunter. “We also have another senior in Dallas Johnson. Dallas had some
limited time last year because of some physical issues but he’s back
and playing well. We have a solid core group of seniors and good
chemistry amongst these young men.”
While there are only four seniors, Gunter is leaning heavily on one of
those seniors.
“Grady is our only four year letterman,” Gunter pointed out. “His
experience in the Cross County Conference is going to play a huge part
in where this team figures in at the end of the season. We are going to
look for his leadership on the court. We need the leadership he
possess’”
With the inexperience facing him once again, Gunter knows he has to be
patient and wait for his team to come of age.
“It’s going to be a lot of what we had last year,” Gunter admitted. “I
have to wait for them to come around and get their feet under them. I
know after our seniors, our juniors have very limited playing time at
the varsity level as do our sophomores. The will get playing time at
the varsity level but they come in with little experience.”
With not a lot of height, the Trojans will turn to speed a quickness to
win games.
“We will have to rely on team speed,” said Gunter. “This is a team that
will have to rely on our defense to fuel or offense. On offense, we
will be a team that will try to control the ball a little bit more. We
have to stay within our comfort zone as far as our game shots are
concerned.”
The Trojans will open at home on Friday, November 30, with Covington.
