New
head coach ready to go in Arcanum
Small community
attracts Marker

ARCANUM- The 2012-13 version of Arcanum wrestling won’t see things that
other teams will see.
The biggest being the amount of wrestlers on the team.
With only 10 kids on the squad, first year head coach Andy Marker will
take his crew into battle and watch the chips fall where they may.
Now Marker wants to build on the program that former coach Rick Stone
started.
“He (Stone) built a great foundation,” said Marker. “Rick had five or
six district qualifiers a year ago and due to time constraints, he had
to step down but I am glad to be here."
While Marker is at Arcanum, the Trojan powers were not the only one
looking at him.
“I had some D-I and II offers and I came to Arcanum,” said Marker. “I
basically came here because of the community and the kids. This is a
tight farming community and I knew there would be some hard working
kids here. I knew with the base Coach Stone had, there would be a solid
effort here.”
When the season started, Marker said he had 16 or 17 kids but lost a
few to conditioning.
“When it comes to kids there is an attrition,” said Marker. “I got
hired on late so I didn’t have a lot of time get out into the hallways
and talk to the kids like I wanted to. This is a hard sport and you
have to work hard if you want to be successful at it.”
Of the kids that will dress, Marker has just two seniors to guide the
team into the season. Those seniors are Adam Oda and Kellen Sanders.
“Adam will wrestle at the 126 pound class while Kellen is currently
weighing in at about 190 and is looking to get down to about 182
pounds,” said Marker. “Right now I have a freshman that will come in at
106 pounds and that’s going to be tough. He’s coming along and is
working real hard and his name is Caleb Sanders.”
Before Marker would dwell on the rest of his weight classes and who
would fill those spots, the new coach said he would know more right
before Thanksgiving when his kids do the weight-hydration alpha test.
“I tell the kids there are always a lot of pretenders in December,”
Marker said in conclusion. “I’m not to worried about how we start but
how well we finish in late January and early February. My motto is
‘hard work wins.”
