proves positive for Jets in scrimmage
Jets have room for improvement
By George Starks
PITSBURG - Under new leadership (Troy Meyers), the Franklin Monroe
Jets, like their opposition, Greenville, has a long way to go and less
than a month to get there.
The opening scrimmage of the season brought out many things for the new
bench boss to look at.
“I think our team had a real good first week of practice and I think it
carried over to tonight,” Meyers said. “We have a lot of things that we
need to shore up. Overall, I think we looked pretty decent.”
A year ago, Meyers was sitting the bench with former coach Marcus
Bixler, now at Tipp City.
Meyers took the time to see what Bixler did and seems to be staying
with what worked then.
“We’re not changing a whole heck of a lot of anything from what we were
doing a year ago,” said Meyers. “One of the things we are going to
change is the culture we play with every day. That includes the energy
and the attitude we take to the floor in game and practice situations.
We got off to a slow start tonight and I think the kids were a little
overwhelmed. Once we settled down and tried to play into what we were
doing.”
On offense, Meyers was surprised by a few things starting with getting
the ball in motion.
“We set a lot of sideline ball screens and that is good,” said Meyers.
“With the kind of system we play, that was exposing us a little bit. I
think it was good for us because it’s something we’re not used to.”
On offense, returning letterman, Trey Mong was tested by the Wave bigs.
“Trey struggled a little bit against the Greenville big guys in the
post but it was a stiff test for him in the opening scrimmage of the
year,” Meyers pointed out. “He faded a little and was kind of soft but
we will work on that with him. I though our high-low work went well on
occasion with him and the Drew kid is a big kid and the Balsbaugh kid
is very athletic. So it was a big test for him.”
While Mong was tested in the post, the guards were tested as well.
“Our ball movement was good but when we go to two deep and our point is
out of there, we struggle a bit,” Meyers admitted. “We have to have our
guys step up and things like this allow us to figure out how we’re
going to play.”
With three weeks to go, Meyers said his team needs to improve beyond
the X’s and O’s.
The Jets will open the 2012-13 season on November 30 at Ansonia in a
Cross County Conference game.
