School spirit is strong at the prep level
By George Starks
DARKE COUNTY - It’s been obvious for years.
Go to a high school sporting event and look for the student cheering
section. Some kids have more imagination than one might think.
For instance, Saturday night at Tri-Village, the Patriot students had a
theme and Saturday, it was toga. I remember when Greenville introduced
2 Live Stage Crew. One night it was a rodeo theme, the next night it
was a night at the beach.
No matter where I go, it seems like the student section has got something going on.
I will be the first to say, “I love it.”
I get a charge going into a gym and watching the kids in the student section. They are a lot of fun to watch.
Last season, kids at Ansonia were in monkey suits while the students at
Mississinawa Valley were decked out in black and red with their faces
painted.
No matter what, it’s usually something different but one thing’s a
given. School spirit is alive and well and for some, there’s a
tradition that will never be broken
Such is the case at Franklin Monroe. The FM fans will never sit down at
a basketball game until their team scores. Once the Jets score, the
crowd will sit down but the students remain on their feet. If you’re an
outsider and wanting to see the game, you had better move to another
location in the gym.
Friday and Saturday, I had to laugh, especially Friday, as one kid was dressed like an old man while another was in ninja gear.
The season will resume Thursday night with many girls games on tap.
As for me, I will be heading to Ansonia both Thursday (MV-Lady Tigers)
and Friday (FM at Ansonia). Saturday, its back to Tri-Village and a
boys/girls double header with National Trail.
Next time you go to a game, watch the student section. They might have more going on than you know.
