DARKE COUNTY - It’s the most wonderful season of the year. No, I’m not
talking about Christmas but about basketball.
When it comes to prep sports, I usually look forward to the fall sports
ending so we can get basketball underway.
Please, don’t misunderstand me. Football, tennis, cross country and the
rest of the fall sports are important but, because of my love for
hoops, it’s my favorite season of the year.
Eight schools in the county will be looking for a shot at conference
titles as well as deep runs into the playoffs.
Friday night, it all starts at Tri-Village and Celina with the Bill
Burkett Tournament and the OVISCO Classic in Celina.
The tournament in New Madison will feature the Arcanum Lady Trojans
along with Ansonia, Arcanum and Franklin Monroe as well as the host
Patriots.
Once again, the Patriots will look to defend their title but there are
three other teams wanting that title also.
Arcanum may pose the biggest threat to Tri-Village. Rachel Fearon and
the Trojans will come in with all guns loaded, as will the Tigers and
Jets.
All three teams have something to prove. Ansonia is looking to make a
statement under its second coach in as many years, while second year
coach Gavin Spitler would love nothing more than to play the role of
the spoiler and win it all, sneaking up on the favored Patriots and
yes, this is where I will be.
Greenville and Versailles will take part in the OVISCO and longtime
Lady Tiger, Jackie Stonebreaker, as well as first year coach Erik
Vanover, will have their teams ready to go.
I have to admit, I’m excited and ready to crank it up.
I have the whole month of December mapped out as to where I will be for
not only the ladies and the guys but wrestling as well.
As I looked at the schedules for the boys, a few games jumped out at me
and the first one comes on opening night, November 30 when Franklin
Monroe travels Ansonia.
On the very next night, December 1, National Trail is at Tri-Village
for a boys/girls double header starting with the girl’s junior varsity
at 3 p.m.
On December 18, the Jets will travel to Mississinawa Valley and the
next night, the Greenville Lady Wave will host Northmont and one day
later, the Minster girls will invade Versailles.
WOW! What a way to get the hoops season going.
Some great action in the grapplers as well will happen in December.
On December 8, Greenville will host its annual wrestling tournament and
Versailles will be at home on December 11 starting at 6 p.m. with a
single duel with Indian Lake.

It’s the most wonderful season of the year.
Wait… did I just hear a referee blow a whistle?
Must be tip time.
