Wave basketball
coach sees plenty in scrimmage
By George Starks
PITSBURG - Pre-season scrimmages are designed to show a coach three
things. The good, the bad and the ugly that his team possesses.
In the case of Greenville coach Mike Bashore, he saw a little bit of
everything Friday night at Franklin Monroe.
Bashore commented on all three after the Wave scrimmage against the
Jets.
“I think we played hard and that was the good,” Bashore pointed out.
“We were more worried about effort and boxing out more tonight than
anything and I thought we did both of those really well. What was bad
tonight was the fact that we put a whole new offense in about a week
ago and we had some miscommunication out there. I think the ugly came
because there was a lack of patience. We need to have more patience on
offense.”
While the lack of patience on offense was obvious, the Wave did show
positive signs in the display of the patience Bashore spoke of.
“When we did slow things down and ran things the right way, we got some
good looks and it helped the kids to see that,” Bashore admitted. “I
think we kind of clicked in the opening 10 minutes and there were times
when I had kids out on the floor that hadn’t played much together in
the past. Like I said, we were looking more for effort tonight than
anything and try to build on that.”
With a young team on the floor that features two sophomores in Aaron
Balsbaugh and Ryan Drew, there will be some growing pains. Drew was a
big part of the Wave offense a year ago under Dane French as a freshman.
The duo did present problems for the Jets when they were on the floor
together.
“We have a lot of young kids out there and I think they did well,”
Bashore said. “We had a freshman in Clay Guillozet out there tonight
and I think we wanted to use this first scrimmage as a gauge to see
what we had. Drew is a big, solid boy and Balsbaugh is real athletic
and those two as a duo is going to help us out and people will have to
start respecting them and free our shooter up a little bit.”
After the opening scrimmage, Bashore saw his team in a realistic way.
“If I had to give my kids a letter grade right now, it would be a ‘C’,”
Bashore remarked. “I think there’s a lot of things we need to improve
on and that’s what you get out of a scrimmage. We are just one week in
so we are going to get better.”
Greenville will scrimmage Ansonia Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Ansonia.
The Wave will open their season at home on Friday, November 30, against
Miamisburg.
