Jets lose in
final seconds to Dayton Christian
By George Starks
GERMANTOWN-With 12 seconds showing on the game clock and a 3-3 score,
Dayton Christian had the upper hand on Franklin Monroe in their
district final soccer match.
With time running out, the Warriors were able to capitalize on the
corner kick to claim a 4-3 victory over the Jets.
Holding a 2-0 lead at the break, Jets coach Danny Diceanu knew the
Warriors had plenty of what was needed to advance.
"We jumped on them early," said Diceanu in a phone conversation. "We
scored a goal in the first three minutes and scored again about 10
minutes later and that put us up 2-0 at the half. I was feeling pretty
good about things but I knew they (DC) still had plenty in the tank."
In a match played with the Warriors earlier this season, the Jets held
a 2-0 lead at the break, only to see the Warriors make a comeback in
that game.
In that game, the final ended up in a 3-3 tie.
Dayton Christian would score the first three goals in the second half,
to take a 3-2 lead over Franklin Monroe.
"We showed a lot of character being able to get a tie at 3-3," said
Diceanu. "We created several chances for ourselves and their keeper had
some real nice saves. One of the shots against us hit the upper 90
across, not straight on, from left to right. Grant (Skelton) was up in
the air and got both hands on it but it went through his hands. It was
a great shot and Grant did a great job to get to it."
The Jets gained the 3-3 tie on a goal by Brian Robison with the assist
coming from Marcus Horner.
I felt real good once we tied it up," said Diceanu. "That goal lifted
our spirits and we played them tough the rest of the way. It was back
and forth the whole time until that corner kick came at the end of the
match."
According to Diceanu, the corner kick came after the Warriors had set
the ball quickly. With the Jets trying to get organized, the kick came.
"To me, it looked like time had expired before the goal was scored but
there is no red light that goes off like in basketball," Diceanu
pointed out. "This was a game that easily could have gone into sudden
death or longer. It was a crushing blow for our kids and it took me
back to the 2007 game when we lost with seven seconds remaining to
Catholic so this one topped that one if you will."
Diceanu ended by saying, "Life is good, soccer just makes it better
regardless of the outcome."
Diceanu will lose four players to graduation, including his keeper,
Skelton.
Franklin Monroe ends it season with a 15-2-1 record.
