Jets
keep rolling with win over Bethel
By George Starks
LEBANON- Monday night, the Franklin Monroe Jets took their show on the
road in district action at Lebanon High School to face Bethel for the
right to play for the District Title against Dayton Christian.
The Bees were no stranger to the Jets as Franklin Monroe and Bethel are
Cross County Conference foes.
On a night when the winning goal would be an own goal, coming off a
throw by Devon Foreman early in the contest, the Jets rolled the Bees,
walking away with a 5-0 victory.
“Devon threw the ball in and he has a very long throw,” said Jets coach
Danny Diceanu. “The ball hit off one of their guys and went in. We
contested the ball at first but it went in and that was the winning
goal.”
With five goals scored, the Jets had their chances but name of the game
for the Jets was defense.
Jets keeper Grant Skelton was not overly busy according to Diceanu but
the defense could have been better.
“We had many chances in the first half and the score could have been
four or five nothing at the half,” Diceanu pointed out. “We gave Bethel
more chances that I thought we should and we recovered well. We didn’t
let them have that many opportunities the first time around so we got a
little bit relaxed. We gave them some chances but we stymied them
pretty well.”
Thursday, the Jets will travel to Germantown Valley View to do battle
with Dayton Christian.
Another team the Jets has faced once this year.
“This team is much better than their record indicates. They had to
forfeit a few games because of a player that wasn’t eligible due to
grades,” said the Jets coach.
“This is a rematch. We played them to a tie, 3-3, at their place the
first around. They have some guys that can score some goals and are
very powerful. This was the school that knocked us out of the districts
in 2006. We had a 0-0 tie and went to penalty kicks. We have to shut
down their shots on goal if we are going to win this one. We have to
cut down their chances to score.”
The game is set to start at 7 p.m. Thursday at Valley View High School.
