Hawks can't
overcome powerhouse Russia
All county teams eliminated
By George Starks
TIPP CITY- The start of action Saturday found tw county teams left in
the OHSAA sectional tournament.
In Tipp City, Mississinawa Valley was at war with Russia while in
Brookville, the Versailles Tigers were doing battle with Anna.
After getting to the sectional finals to face Russia, the Hawks
couldn't overcome a loaded Raiders team.
Fighting hard to the end, MV was no match for Russia, falling 25-13,
25-14, 25-14.
"Russia was ranked 13th or 15th in the state in D-IV," said Hawks coach
Scott Brewer. "Our hearts were in it and the girls were ready to play
but it just wasn't meant to be. We started out well but we were forced
to take some early timeouts."
Taking early leads, the Hawks brought everything they had to the table
but the Raiders were too much to overcome and Brewer was impressed with
one of the Raiders that proved to be a thorn.
"The Monnin girl (Olivia) was tough," Brewer pointed out. "That girl
could hit and she has a great jump serve. She had 25 points and that
was the difference in the match. She is a nice player."
With the season ending loss, the Hawks finished with a 15-10 mark and
having a young team, Brewer was pleased with the way his kids played.
"We played well and we played hard," Brewer noted. "With the jump serve
of Monnin, we didn't make good passes to the setter so we couldn't make
good sets."
It's not the way a coach wants to end a season but all things
considered, there's no shame in losing to a team of this caliber.
"We came out and did what we had to do," said Brewer. "We attacked the
net well when we could. Russia's tough, make no mistake about it, but
my girls were up for the challenge. The last two days of practice, the
girls had a real positive attitude. We came out and had goals set for
each other but they were just way too strong."
In Brookville, the Versailles Lady Tigers were eliminated by Anna in
four games, 18-25, 31-29, 25-19, 25-22.
