Darke County record: 18-32
A down year for
area football teams
By George Starks
DARKE COUNTY-When the start of football season arrives, all schools
look for success. They all want that magical season that says, "we
earned the right to play for a state title".
Even for this sports writer, I have high hopes for all teams, hoping we
can get at least two teams into the post season.
The 2012 football season was a disappointment for Darke County.
With the exception of the 8-2 Bradford Railroaders, the other five
schools combined (Ansonia, Arcanum, Greenville, Mississinawa Valley and
Versailles) were a dismal 10-30. Throw in Bradford's 8-2 mark, then it
goes to 18-32.
Still not very pretty.
The best showing of the county schools in that 10-30 group was
Versailles.
The Tigers started out with so much promise. Despite losing their
season opener to Celina, Versailles started to click. Through the first
seven games, the Tigers were able to build a 5-2 record and were ranked
seventh in the D-5, Region 20 polls.
At that point, I was thinking a 7-3 mark could get Versailles into the
post season with Bradford.
That was not to be as Versailles lost its final three games to finish
with a 5-5 mark with its first year coach, Adam Miller.
Arcanum, under first year coach TJ Powers, could only muster three wins
on the season with seven losses. I never got to see the Trojans play
this season but I do know that Powers will get things together in
Trojan land.
Greenville was another school that watched a new head coach take over a
program in Aaron Schaffer. The Wave went 1-9 this year and again was
just part of the down trodden year in Darke County football.
Like Powers in Arcanum, Schaffer will need some time to get his program
on the right track.
In Greenville, that could take a little more than just time. Schaffer
will have to be left alone to build the program.
That means keeping his contract intact.
In Ansonia, Eugene Hoening watched his Tigers limp to a 1-9 season.
Ansonia fielded a young team and don't look for the Tigers to be down
long. A 1-9 mark this year could turn into a 6-4 record in 2013.
The Mississinawa Valley Blackawks suffered another down year, this time
0-10. What else can be said about the Hawks? Who knows, maybe one day,
MV will get back to the glory it once had but that remains to be seen.
As for me, basketball season is right around the corner. Let's hope the
hoops teams can show better than the football teams.
GO DARKE COUNTY!
