Blue Jays fight hard in loss
V-Tigers
overpowers Delphos

VERSAILLES- If you want to beat the Versailles volleyball team,
bringing your ‘A’ game may not be good enough.
You had better bring your ‘A+’ game and hope for the best.
Like a pack of wild animals on the prowl, Versailles brought out its
attack and unleashed a 25-11, 25-23, 25-11 victory over Delphos St.
Johns Thursday.
With the first and third games being blowouts, the Blue Jays stepped it
up a notch against the Tigers in the middle game of the three and
Tigers coach Carla Otte admitted, when it’s a conference match, nothing
comes easy.
“Delphos fought hard and they reminded us if you want to win in the
MAC, you have to fight hard,” said Otte. “We just lost focus in that
second game and stopped playing as a team. Delphos got away with
throwing the ball at us when we were not expecting it and they caught
us on our heels. Again, they showed us you have to pay attention and
fight for every point.”
Game two proved to be the big struggle for the Tigers as Delphos kept
Versailles on its heels and on the defense right from the opening serve.
Delphos held a lead up to the 11-8 point before the Tigers picked up
the pace.
Versailles finally got even at 12-12 but had to deal with five ties and
two lead changes before gaining a 21-20 lead late in the game.
The net play proved to be a huge difference with sophomore Christa
Puthoff proving to be a major player in the Tigers scheme of things.
“We were very successful behind out setters tonight and she just keeps
taking those steps,” said Otte. “That doesn’t always happen but we had
the hot hitters tonight and Christa just keeps improving every game.
Our serve receive tonight wasn’t our best showing of the year and you
know that ball control is the name of the game.”
With two more games left in the season, Versailles will take a 15-3
record to the tournament draw on Sunday before traveling to Marion
Local next Tuesday. Versailles will finish the season at home next
Thursday with New Bremen.
