VERSAILLES - With the weather making life difficult for everyone, the
Versailles Tigers were able to overcome the elements Friday night.
Despite the rain and the mud, junior quarterback Nick Campbell threw
for two scores and senior running back Mike Rutschilling ran in for two
more as Versailles continued to roll in the MAC, unloading a 42-8 loss
on New Bremen.
“With the conditions it was hard to get everything going,” said
Versailles coach Adam Miller after the game. “We had to stick with the
running game.”
The running game proved to be more than sufficient for the Tigers on
this night.
At the end of the first half, Versailles had rolled up 129 yards of
offense on the ground, with Rutschilling getting both his scores, a 19
yard romp and a four yard scamper.
After New Bremen took the opening kick and controlled the clock,
running 12 plays and killing nearly eight minutes off the clock, the
Tigers final got the offense on the field with 4:12 left in the opening
stanza.
With the first quarter ending at 0-0, the Tigers were able to get on
the board at the 9:20 mark of the half on a 10 yard pass from Campbell
to Damien Richard.
The Tigers struck again at the three minute mark on the 19 yard scamper
from Rutschilling.
Thirty-one seconds later, the Tigers were on the board again, this time
on a 60 yard hook-up between Campbell and Jacob Barga.
With 1:59 remaining left before the break, the Tigers kicked off.
With a fourth and forever staring the Cardinals in the face, deep in
their own territory, the center made a bad snap and the Tigers were in
business at the New Bremen four.
One play later, Rutschilling found the end zone and Versailles held a
very comfortable, 28-0 lead at the half.
While the first half running game clicked for the Tigers, the passing
game was in near perfect form as Campbell threw for 110 yards on four
of five passing in the opening 24 minutes.
“I am very happy with the way kids stuck with it and we got the late
scores in the half,” said Miller. “The defense is playing great and we
did a great job of taking away their quarterback and fullback. They got
some yards but not enough to make a living.”
Versailles would open a 42-0 score up by the end of the third frame
before New Bremen would get on the board late in the final quarter.
The Tigers, 5-2, will travel to Delphos St. Johns next week and a date
with the Blue Jays.
