Canan,
Navas-Davis best in August
By George Starks
DARKE COUNTY- With the 2012 sports season barely in full swing, two
Darke County athletes have already made their presence felt.
Bradford's James Canan and Greenville's Sophia Navas-Davis are the top
athletes for County News Online in August.
Navas-Davis, Greenville Tennis
Recently when the Troy Lady Trojans visited Greenville, it was
Navas-Davis who turned the tide for the Wave.
After number two singles player, junior Michelle Borgerding and the
number three singles player, freshman Raquel Navas-Davis, had won their
respective matches, Sophia put the Wave over the top with the GWOC
North victory.
"Sophia is a fighter," said Wave tennis coach Jim Koontz. "She may only
be a junior but she is good and is a leader for us."
After losing the first set, 4-6, Navas-Davis went down 2-1 in the
second set before turning on the jets to make the much needed comeback.
With the number one doubles team having already lost and the second
doubles team on the ropes, the Greenville junior went on to post a 6-2,
6-1 victory to win the match two sets to one and give the match win to
Greenville.
Canan, Bradford Football
James Canan has been a huge difference maker for the Bradford football
team thus far.
In the opening game of the season against Ansonia, Canan recorded 196
rushing yards on 13 carries (15.07 yards a carry). In that game, Canan
scored five touchdowns in the 48-12 victory.
Along with his efforts against Ansonia on opening night, Canan was a
huge difference maker against Bethel in the second game of the season
and a huge Cross County Conference victory.
At the end of August, the Roaders were 2-0, 1-0 in the CCC while the
Wave tennis team finished 7-2 for the opening month of the 2012 fall
sports season.
