Bradford gets
back on winning track
Ansonia remains winless
By George Starks
ANSONIA- With football being shoved back once again due to weather on
Friday, the Bradford Railroaders had to wait a few hours to get back on
the winning track against Ansonia.
After a week four loss to Covington, the Roaders had something to prove.
Once the game got underway Saturday, it didn’t take long for the
visiting Roaders to flex their muscle.
With 2:49 having elapsed in the game, Bradford signal caller Brandon
Wysong hooked up with senior standout James Canan on a 24 yard pass
play for the opening score.
Canan, listed at 5-11 and 170 pounds, would score four more times, all
on the ground, as Bradford blasted Ansonia for the second time this
season, 48-14, nearly duplicating the week one win, 48-12, to go 4-1
overall and 3-1 in the conference.
“The kids played hard,” said Bradford coach Curtis Enis. “”We came out,
played physical and we played with confidence.”
With Ansonia freshman Jordan Newman running wild a week ago against
National Trail, the Bradford defense stepped up to shut the diaper
dandy down.
“The defense did a really good job reading their keys,” said Enis.
“They shined today and got back to playing good, Bradford defensive
football. They made a big comeback after last week. The offensive line
came out, motivated about what we do at Bradford. It was fun to see the
kids bounce back.”
In a pre-game conversation, Enis said his kids needed to get back to
playing Bradford football, coming off a 56-6 loss to the Buccs.
“One thing I try to teach these young men is that football is a very
physical game,” Enis pointed out. “We have to come out and set the tone
and we did that today. After last week, they were given the opportunity
to come out and do that.
Through the first four games this year Canan had rushed for an
incredible 1,114 yards on 101 carries for an average of 11 yards per
carry and 16 touchdowns.
Saturday, Canan ran wild. Unofficially, the senior carried the ball 14
times for 287 yards with four rushing touchdowns.
To add insult to injury, Bradford features two other backs,
senior Jake Cline and senior Justin Rench who combined for 14 carries
for 143 yards, including a 17 yard score from Cline.”
“There is a strong opportunity for these three kids to realize what
they have back there,” Enis admitted. “I think they all complement each
other. I think the offensive line really came together and battled
through some adversity and just really gelled.”
Now 0-5 overall, Ansonia coach Eugene Hoening gave proper credit where
it was due.
“I want to congratulate Bradford. They have a good, physical team,”
said Hoening. They play hard and their backs are probably the
best trio I’ve seen this year. Their defense kept coming and knocking
our guys back and we’re not used to that. They are sure tacklers and
very aggressive. They are a fundamentally sound football team. Today,
we were beat by a good football team.”
Next week, the Tigers will travel to Arcanum while the Railroaders host
Tri-County North.
