Lady Hawks defeat Monroe Central in three

UNION CITY- It wasn't the prettiest win but no matter how ugly, it's still a win.

The Mississinawa Valley Lady Blackhawks went to 7-5 on the season after defeating the Monroe Central Golden Bears in three straight games, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-15 Monday.

"A win is a win and we'll take it," said Hawks coach Scott Brewer.

When Mississinawa Valley walked off the court Monday night, it was obvious, some things needed fixed.

"Our passing is really off," Brewer pointed out. "Our passing against Russia Saturday really killed us but we're working on our passes. We're pleased because we thought we passed a lot better tonight. If we can stay on that high note, we can go from there and build on that."

It was a night when points on serves were at a minimum on the part of both squads, with many points coming on sides outs due to net serves, serves that went out of bounds or a kill ending the volley action.

"Monroe Central was very competitive last year," Brewer said. "Tonight, they weren't, I think they graduated a lot of their team from a year ago. They stayed with us in the first two games and we put it away in the third."

It was a match that was made up of mini runs in the scoring department. The last of those runs came in the third game, proving to be the difference maker.

With things knotted 2-2, the Hawks went on a huge 15-3 run to open up a commanding 17-5 lead.

The Bears would eventually score 10 more points but would never come close to getting back in the game to contend for a win.

At the net, Maddie Murphy and Hope Neargarder put down some kills with authority.

"They hit some really nice balls," said Brewer. "They (MC) were giving us the corners and I had the girls going for the lines. Then they had a big hole in the middle and I had Madison going for that. We pretty much hit it where we wanted to tonight."

Neargarder led the Hawks attack with13 blocks, 13 kills and 14 digs. Heather Dirksen recorded 19 digs while Maddie Murphy added 14 in support. Victory Humphries had a dozen assists.

The Hawks will play at Union Modoc in Indiana Thursday.

Also on Monday, the Lady Wave defeated Eaton in three games, 25-12, 25-12, 27-25.
