Tri-Village
to host state qualifying cheer competition
By George Starks
NEW MADISON - It's time to get your cheer on and your spirit in line.
The Tri-Village Athletic Boosters are sponsoring the 7th Annual Patriot
Championship 2012 on Sunday, September 23 at the Tri-Village High
School gym.
The annual event now has a twist to it. It's not just a cheer
competition but now is a state qualifying event with plenty to be
gained.
A win in this competition, will automatically earn your team a trip to
the state competition and 50 dollars off your team’s entry fee.
A win at state means a trip to Orlando and a performance at Disney.
For 2008 T-V grad, Danielle Ary, a Patriot cheerleader and now an
advisor with her mother Darlene (Cloyd) Ary, a 1978 graduate of
Tri-Village, the growth of this competition has become more than she
could have imagined.
"There is no way any of us could have imagined this ever happening,"
Danielle said in a CNO exclusive interview. "Who would have thought
that little ole Tri-Village would be recognized by the OHSAA, to be
able to hold a competition of this magnitude. To me, it's overwhelming."
In the opening year of the competition, there were just eight
performances total that lasted just two hours.
"That year, things went so well and people were so happy with the fact
that it went as quickly as it did and it was as clean as it was that
when they left, we had nothing but great comments on what was done. It
just gets larger every year."
The next year, eight became 16 teams and from there things started to
escalate.
Last year, over 50 performances were rendered at the school and nearly
the same is expected in 2012.
According to Darlene Ary, there will be six pee-wee squads as well as
numerous junior high teams and currently, 22 high school teams. In
addition, there will be individual performances at all three levels."
Because of the huge crowds and a large concession stand that will be in
operation, a big screen will be set up in the commons area. The
entrance to the commons will be filled with decorative tables that will
be selling long stemmed carnations to purchase for your favorite
cheerleader. Also, cheer sweatpants and a commemorative t-shirt will be
for sale.
In addition, MBixler Productions will be videotaping the event. DVD's
will be available for $20 if ordered the day of the event and $25 if
ordered the day after the competition.
In the eyes of Darlene, things have changed so much over the years and
the competition means a lot not only for the kids involved but for the
art of cheerleading itself.
"Back when I was in school, no one gave any thought to the
cheerleaders," said Ary. "People didn't talk about the cheerleader.
We've always had great cheer programs throughout the years and it made
Tri-Village people proud."
On the field/court, cheerleaders have been known to put on some great
shows at half-time and were there to help get the crowd behind their
team.
Now, these kids are doing more than just cheering at a game.
"These kids work hard not only at what they do but they work hard in
the community," said Darlene. "We do community service projects, we've
helped with the F.I.S.H. program and fund raising dinners for the Sara
Bevins Memorial Scholarship Fund." (Bevins, the daughter of Tim and Pam
Bevins, was killed two years ago in a car accident.)
For the little ones, the competition is a fun thing. It also helps to
pave the way for future cheerleaders.
Doors will open to the squads for registration at noon the day of the
competition with the public being invited in at 1 p.m.
The competition will begin at 2 p.m.
