Bengals,
Reds in middle on
‘smartest spenders’ list
Tuesday, September 4, 2012
The
Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati
Bengals both rank in the middle of professional sports teams when it
comes to
the smartest spenders.
According
to Bloomberg
Businessweek, the Reds ranked No. 73 and the Bengals No. 78 out of 122
professional sports teams.
Bloomberg
said it used payroll data
to calculate how much teams spent per win over the last five seasons,
“then compared
every team against league average, producing a total score we call the
efficiency index. The median score for every league is zero. The lower
the
score, the less a team spent for its wins.”
The
Tampa Bay Rays topped the list
with a -1.8198 “efficiency index,” thanks to their $50.2 million
average
payroll over the past five years, which is almost $40 million less than
the
league average over the same period.
The
St. Louis Rams ranked last on
the list.
