Sluggish
Tri-Village too much for Ansonia
Tigers still looking for first win
By George Starks
NEW MADISON - When Tri-Village caught fire on the volleyball court
Thursday against Ansonia, head coach Jackie Barnes was visibly pleased.
The problem was that Barnes could never stay pleased as the fire was
usually put out in quick fashion.
Despite the Patriots sluggish play at times, Tri-Village won its Cross
County Conference match against Ansonia in three straight games, 25-15,
25-8 and 25-15.
“There are times when we get lax and make some bonehead errors,”
said Barnes after the match. “I think overall, it was a pretty good
match.”
Game one set the tone for the Pats. After exchanging several side-outs,
the Patriots went up by a 7-4 margin and Tigers Coach Jason Hemmelgarn
was forced to take time to re-group his troops.
Hemmelgarn spoke his piece but it was Barnes that got the point across.
Tri-Village returned to the floor, racked off seven straight points
from serves by junior Rachel Ferris after Ferris had already scored a
point previous to the Ansonia time-out.
“I noticed two of Ansonia’s points were on errors when we weren’t in
the right spots,” said Barnes. “I told the girls that we were winning
but we weren’t winning by playing our style of volleyball. We weren’t
getting to our spots and we needed to fix it. At that point, the light
bulb came on.”
After winning game two 25-8, the Patriots built a 17-6 lead in the
third game of the match but before Barnes could blink her eyes, Ansonia
had closed the gap to 18-12 and was getting some momentum built up.
After Barnes took a minute to get her troops back together, the
Patriots got stingy and cruised to the 10 point win.
“We were getting lax at that point because we were up by 11 and the
girls thought they were going to cruise,” Barnes said. “Ansonia was not
about to go away and they let us know they came to play.”
While the Patriots went to 5-1 on the season, the Tigers fell to 0-5
overall.
“In that third game, we were getting some good free ball passing,
making good sets and hitting the ball,” Hemmelgarn said. “When we can
do that, we are a completely different team. Tonight, we had way too
many passes that didn’t go to target. If we can get our passing down
better, we would be a better team.”
On the night, Sara Bowman led the Patriots in scoring with 15 points
and seven kills while Ferris had 13 points and 10 kills.
Raya Mikesell tallied 19 assists with Shea Thomas getting 10 digs.
