Coldwater
takes Verailles in MAC opener
By George Starks
VERSAILLES- There were three keys to Versailles beating Coldwater
Friday/Saturday in the Tigers MAC season opener.
Key one: Play solid defense against the team that beat them twice a
year ago and in the post season. Result: The Tigers held the state
finals team to just 21 points.
Key two: Keep the turnovers to a minimum. Result: The Tigers had no
turnovers.
Key three: Present the Cavaliers a balance attack on offense with the
pass and rush. Result: That didn't happen.
Versailles could muster just 134 yards on the ground to the 283 rolled
up by Coldwater and a measley 81 through the air as Coldwater posted a
21-7 victory over Versailles.
When play was suspended Friday due to weather/lightening, the Tigers
trailed 7-0.
Versailles would gain a 7-7 tie when play resumed Saturday as the
Tigers picked up at the 6:31 mark of the half and scored just over two
minutes later on a 19 yard pass from junior Nick Campbell to Jacob
Barga.
That was as close as the Tigers would get.
When Coldwater took possession of the ball with 4:14 remaining, the
Cavs went 80 yards in 11 plays, capped off by a five yard pass from
Austin Bruns to Caleb Siefering with 12 seconds remaining.
Versailles would run the clock out, going in at the half, trailing 13-7
as the PAT was blocked by Nick Francis.
Coldwater would get the final score of the contest in the third quarter
on a 12 yard run by Jordan Chapin with 8:43 left in the frame.
The victory left the Cavs at 3-0 while Versailles dropped to 1-2 on the
season.
Versailles will play at Anna next Friday. The Tigers will be looking
for their first win ever at the home of the Rockets.
